Public Sector banks list
Public Sector Banks are the banks in
which the majority of Stake is held by government (means more than 50% of
Stake). Public Sector Banks are also called as nationalized banks. What is
nationalization? And when did the banks nationalized? Nationalization means the
process of taking the private industry/ assets into public Ownership. In 1969,
14 commercial banks are nationalized for the first time and after that 6 more
commercial banks are nationalized in 1980. At that time total no. of
nationalized banks are 20. But In 1993 the Indian government merged New Bank of
India with Punjab National Bank. After this action in banking the number
reduced to 19. At that time the Indian government controlled 91% of banking
business in India. State Bank of India is also public sector bank from the
beginning but it has another name i.e., Imperial Bank of India and the name was
changed in 1955. State Bank of India has 5 associate banks at present. They are
State Bank of Bikaner or Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore,
State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore. The list of public sector
